What Is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text that's been used in publishing and graphic design since the 1500s. It's derived from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero, a Latin treatise on ethics written in 45 BC. The scrambled version was popularized by Aldus Manutius's print shop and became the standard in type-setting and design.

Using placeholder text instead of real content is deliberate: it stops readers from focusing on the words and keeps their attention on the visual layout, typeface, and composition — which is what you actually want to evaluate during the design phase.

The History of Lorem Ipsum

Lorem ipsum traces its roots to 45 BC, when Cicero wrote 'De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' — a philosophical treatise exploring the ends of good and evil. The passage that became lorem ipsum comes from Book I, Section 32. Sometime in the 1500s, an unknown printer took sections of Cicero's text and scrambled the words to create a neutral sample with the visual rhythm of Latin prose but no actual meaning.

Two moments really cemented lorem ipsum in modern design. In the 1960s, Letraset — the company behind dry-transfer lettering sheets — included it as filler on their sheets. Designers everywhere started using it by default. Then in the 1980s, Aldus Corporation bundled it as the default sample text in PageMaker, one of the first desktop publishing apps. From that point, every generation of designers learned lorem ipsum as the standard. Today it shows up in software mockups, wireframes, portfolios, and template files across virtually every industry.

When to Use (and Not Use) Placeholder Text

Placeholder text is the right choice in several situations. During wireframing and early mockups, it lets you establish the visual hierarchy and spacing of a layout without getting bogged down in writing real copy before the design is finalized. When testing typefaces and font sizes, lorem ipsum reveals how a font handles letter-spacing, line height, and long-form reading without letting a specific word choice distract the eye. For presenting a design template to be reused across many projects — such as a blog theme or a document template — placeholder text makes clear which areas are meant to be replaced. It also works well for creating screenshots, demo videos, and portfolio pieces where actual content is irrelevant or confidential.

However, there are cases where lorem ipsum is actively harmful. If you are presenting a design to a client who might not understand design conventions, placeholder text can be confusing — they may wonder if the layout is broken or not yet complete. For accessibility testing, you need real content to properly evaluate reading flow, screen reader compatibility, and cognitive load. In content-first design approaches, where the copy drives the layout decisions, inserting lorem ipsum too early can lead to a design that looks great in mockup but fails when actual text is dropped in. And for any mockup destined to appear publicly — in a blog post, a tutorial, or a press release — real sample content produces a more professional result than scrambled Latin.
